The 70th Italian Chess Championship is being played from 23rd November to 4th December at the Hotel Athena in the city of Siena. 12 players compete in the round robin tournament where GM Lexy Ortega is defending the title earned at the 2009 Championship.

IM Denis Rombaldoni and GM Carlos Garcia Palermo continue the tense race for the winner's trophy. The two players sport 5.5 points from seven games each. The top seed and two-times Italian champion Fabiano Caruana is close behind with 5.0 points.
