Bhiwani (26 Sep 10) :- Better tie-break score helped International Master M R Venkatesh of PSPB to clinch the 48th National Challengers Chess Championship after beating T U Navin Kanna of Tamilnadu in the final round here at Preksha Vihar on Sunday.
In the final round saw decisive battles at top boards and second seed M S Thej Kumar of Railways defeated team mate International Master Suvrajit Saha while Shyam Sundar of Tamilnadu got better off Vikramditya Kamble and joined Venkatesh at pole position with 10 points. Three way tie for the coveted trophy resolved by Buchholz tie break score and Bharat Petroleum employee Venkatesh edged out both Thej Kumar and Shyam Sundar to finish first. M S Thej Kumar secured runner-up position while Shyam Sundar satisfied with third spot finish.
Top thirty players from this championship qualified for the forthcoming National Premier (National ‘A’) Chess Championship scheduled to be held at New Delhi in the month of December. Surprisingly, the prominent players like third seed IM Swapnil Dhopade, IM Himanshu Sharma, IM K Rathnakaran, IM Praveen Kumar C were failed to qualify for the event.
