sandro_marecoThe third Open "Simón Bolivar Libertador" took place from 24th June to 4th July at the Club Argentino de Ajedrez in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The 9-round Swiss tournament with 120 participants featured $24.000 in prizes.

Sandro Mareco (photo), who was recently awarded Grandmaster title, convincingly secured the victory in this tournament by scoring seven consecutive points in first seven rounds. In round eight he drew GM Andres Rodriguez and then again won the last game for a total of 8.5 points. A group of followers, GM Diego Flores, GM Andres Rodriguez, IM Horacio Saldano, IM Federico Perez Ponsa, GM Sergio Slipak and German Spata are full two points behind the winner.
