1st Hainan Danzhou Super Grand Master Chess Tournament has reached round 5. Ding Liren with black pieces chose his favorite opening, the French Defence against Wang Hao.

His opponent is very experienced in this line but today he probably made the mistake of allowing Ding to sacrifice a piece for 3 pawns and gain enough compensation. In the end

Ding managed to win this game by pushing 3 middle pawns which White couldn’t stop.

Zhou Jianchao was very lucky to defeat Zhao Jun in a position where Zhao had a big advantage. Before Zhao made a terrible mistake under time pressure, he played very well in

the Grunfield Defence. Zhou missed the chance to equalize the position and played 23…Bxc3 which proved to be the wrong move. Ni Hua didn’t recover from his last game and

gifted a pawn to Li Chao in a Berlin Defence. It didn’t take much energy for Li Chao to win the endgame with the extra pawn.

Bu Xiangzhi drew with Yu Yangyi with black and maintained the lead. Hou Yifan drew with Zhou Weiqi in an even rook ending.

Tomorrow is the rest day. All the players will go sight-seeing arranged by the local organizer.
