Unbeaten, C. Natarajan (2221) from India, won the 1st Kandy Open International Rating Chess Championship 2010 convincingly at the National Institute of Co-operative Development,
Polgolla, Kandy, Sri Lanka yesterday.
Natarajan, who is from Chennai India, scored a total of 8 points with only two draws out of 9 games. He won a beautiful Trophy, the Gold medal and Rs. 50,000/- in cash.
The Inaugural Kandy open, conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka was organised by the 64 Squares Chess Academy, Kandy from 26th to 31st May 2010 at National Institute of Polgolla, Sri Lanka.
The awarding ceremony was held under the patronage of Prof Parakrama Karunarate, the Dean of the Science Faculty of the University of Peradeniya, as the chief Guest while Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, Hony.
Secretary of Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and Mr. Rajeendra Kalugampitiya, the Managing Director of the 64 Squares Chess Academy also attended.
The best news is that two young players, Isuru Alahakoon and PMRL Bandara, performed very well to reach the 2nd spot jointly but, the latter had to satisfied with the Bronze medal on the tie breaker.
Both of them together with Viman Bhagya scored 7 1/2 points out of possible 9 games.
A player from Jaffna, S Vithiyarani, showed that they are also in a level of competing with any top player even though they have less facilities for Chess. She appeared after long years of absence.
There was a good participation from Jaffna, the northern province of Sri Lanka following the peaceful situation in the country. Vithiyarani scored 6 1/2 to win the women's Championship in the event.
Young IDS Kahanda from Southland College also tied with Vithiyarani scoring 6 1/2 points.
