Chess masters of the Caribbean are set to face off in The Islands Of The Bahamas as the Bahamas Chess Federation (BCF) is poised to host its first World Chess Federation (FIDE) tournament.
Last year, the BCF was awarded the right to organize the FIDE 2010 Caribbean Sub Zonal tournament in The Bahamas.

On March 29, the federation officially invited 16 Caribbean nations to field 28 official players to compete. Two of the spots are reserved for Bahamian players. Among the list of other invited countries are Venezuela, Trinidad, Jamaica and Bermuda. The Bahamas along with the other invited countries have the option to enter seven (7) additional players. The Ministry of Youth, Sports & Culture and the Ministry of Tourism & Aviation have given their support to this historic event. “Since becoming a member of FIDE in 1974, the Bahamas Chess Federation has grown steadily and provided organized chess activities for adults and children resident in The Bahamas,” said Charles Maynard, Minister of Youth, Sports & Culture. “Over the past four years, the BCF has held many local FIDE events resulting in 15 FIDE rated players. Also they have two Developmental Chess Instructors. We have been and will continue to support the BCF in this historical project. We look forward in the near future to exploring the possibility of hosting the World Amateur Chess Championship.” Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, Minister of Tourism & Aviation said his ministry was pleased to be a partner in this event, which has potential to lead to more tournament and tourism activities for the country. “This initiative could only bring positive attention to The Bahamas as a viable venue for chess tournaments in the future,” he said. The tournament will be held in Nassau from June 25 to July 1. Top finishers will advance to the Zonal tournament, encompassing all sub zones of the Americas, in 2011.
