Novy Bor Open is taking place from 13th-20th February and is the final part of the Czech Tour 2009/2010 series, worldwide known especially after the huge summer tournament Czech Open in Pardubice. Novy Bor is a small Czech town with 12 thousands inhabitants at the foot of the Lusatian Mountains with world-known glass industry and the leading chess club of the country, which is the regular participant of the European Club Cup (10th place in 2008 was the best result).
Czech Tour tournaments are very popular due to the high standard of organization and the relatively low prices of accommodation. You can also enjoy the speciallity of the event is the glass-blowing tour. You can watch the procedure of handmaking various glass products or even try to produce something yourself. There are also two glass museums and many shopping galleries with the lowest prices of the glass art.
Although Novy Bor is not a typical wintersport centre, there are many skiing possibilities (cross-country skiing or shorter downhills - Polevsko, Luz) in the surroundings of the town. The well-preserved nature lures for hiking.
From the chess point-of-view the tournament is a classical FIDE 9 rounds Swiss with one double round. The games start at 4‘o clock, only the double round and the last round start at 9’o clock. The total prizefund is 30.000 CZK with 10.000 CZK (400€) for the winner. There are no conditions for IMs and GMs and therefore a tough race for the financial prices is expected among the 2100-2400 players. The tournament specialty - the grandmasters of Novy Bor club will be providing special coaching during the tournament to groups or on individual basis.
Novy Bor is running the most visited Czech chess server NSS, a detailed coverage of the tournament is planned including the on-line transmission of 8 top boards at the official site.
