bent-larsenGrandmaster Bent Larsen, Denmark's best chess player ever, will be honoured with several events during the year 2010. The Danish Chess Union invites a number of chess stars to Denmark to mark Bent Larsen 75 years birthday on 4th of March.

Bent Larsen became Grandmaster in 1956 at the age of 21 in the Red Army Theater in Moscow. He reached the semifinals in the Candidates Matches in 1965, 1968 and 1971. In 1967 he was elected to the best chess player for an unprecedented winning streak.

The first celebration event takes place on 2-5th August in Politiken Cup at Lo-Skolen in Elsinore, where Russia's five-time national champion Peter Svidler and Denmark's best Peter Heine Nielsen will meet in a rapidmatch (six games) and two blitz matches - both 10 games.

Peter Svidler was runner up at the World Championships in 2005 and has since been among the very best in the world. The 33-years old Svidler currently holds 10th place at the FIDE ranking list. Peter Heine Nielsen is best known for helping a key second to the World Champion Viswanathan Anand. The 36-years old Dane is No. 37 on the latest world ranking list.

The Danish Chess Union organizes another Grandmaster tournament in Køge, 40 kilometers from Copenhagen, in October. This tournament is also dedicated to Bent Larsen.
