nadezhda-sThe Russian Superfinal Championships for men and women are being held on 20-30th December at the Central Chess Club in Moscow. Both competitions are 10-player round robin tournaments with nearly 100000 EUR in prize funds.

The first round of the women championship saw one win after another and the day finished without a single draw. Anastasia Bodnaruk stunned the top-seeded Tatiana Kosintseva, while the former World Championship finalist Alisa Galliamova returned from a two-year break with a win against experienced Tatiana Stepovaia.

The defending men champion, Peter Svidler, was held to a draw by the young Nikita Vitiugov. Denis Khismatullin outplayed Alexander Riazantsev and Alexander Grischuk eventually broke the persistent defence of Evgeny Tomashevsky. The remaining two games were hard-fought draws.
