The 30th Edoardo Crespi Trophy was held on 5-12th December in Milano, Italy. 250 players took participation in five festival groups, 76 of them competed in the Master Group.
The main event with nine Grandmasters in the field was very exciting. GM Vadim Shishkin was held to a draw in the first round by the 16-years old Italian girl Marina Brunello, after 120 moves and seven hours of play. But Shishkin was still highly motivated and after a series of wins he entered the final round with a full point advantage ahead of the chasing pack.
However, in the last round Shishkin lost against Serbian GM Miroljub Lazic and thus six players shared the first place with 6.5 points (from nine rounds) each. The Ukrainian still clinched the first place on superior tiebreak.
It should be noted that the young Italian women champion Marina Brunello, broke the 2200-elo barrier and finally fulfilled all conditions to be recognized as the first Italian Woman International Master.
Famous composer Ennio Morricone sent a message to wish good luck to all the participants in the Festival.
