Giovanni Vescovi Claims His 6th Brazilian Championship Print

The 76th Chess Championship of Brazil was held on 2-11th December at the Parque Ecológico Municipal in Americana.  Twelve players, top four from the 2008 Championship, five from semifinals and three seeded by the federation, competed in a round robin tournament. GM Andre Diamant defended the last year's trophy.

GM Giovanni Vescovi (photo) collected 8.5 points for a clear first place and his sixth title of the Brazilian national champion. Vescovi equalised the record of GM Gilberto Milos who also holds six trophies. Milos had a chance to finish ahead of Vescovi, but he couldn't win in the direct last round duel and remained second, half a point behind the winner.

8. IM Matsuura Everaldo 2478 - 4.5
9. IM Bittencourt Jorge 2454 - 3.5
10-11. FM Santiago Yago De Moura 2266 and FM Barreto Filho Carlos Alberto 2277 - 3.0
12. Macedo Maximo Iack 2339 - 2.5
