On October 4, 2009, the International Youth Team Chess Tournament started in Elista, Kalmykia. The Opening Ceremony of the tournament devoted to the 400th Anniversary of Voluntary Entering of Kalmyk People into the Russian State took place in the Sport Complex "White Lotus". The teams from Mongolia, Turkmenistan, the Ukraine and the regions of Russia - Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Area, Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, Pskov, Belgorod, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Stavropol region, Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan, Karachay-Cherkessia, Tatarstan, Altai and three teams from the Republic of Kalmykia participated in this tournament.
Boris Spassky, the 10th World Chess Champion, and Sanan Syugirov, the youngest GM of Russia, were invited as the honored guests. Within the international tournament Sanan Syugirov played a simultaneous game with the young chess players of Kabardino-Balkaria, Tatarstan and Kalmykia. The International Youth Team Chess Tournament will be held from 4-10 October 2009 in the City Chess in 9 rounds/Swiss system.
