Grandmaster Mchedlishvili Shines in Ravana Challenge Print

The Grandmaster Mchedlishvili Mikheil (Georgia) scored a total of 7.5 points out of possible 10 games and earned the Championship of Ravana International, the first grandmaster tournament of Sri Lanka concluded yesterday at the Ceylon Continental Hotel in Colombo. He who was the top seed among participants showed that he is the top in the event by defeating GM Shabalov of USA in the crucial final game. GM Alexander Shabalov who was leading after the penultimate round has just to place 3rd with 7 points. GM Georgiev Vladimir (MKD) also scored 7.5 points, but has to get the 2nd place according to the tie breaker.

The 1st Grandmaster Chess Tournament of Sri Lanka, the Ravana International Chess Championship was conducted in a grand manner by the organizer Mr. Muditha Hettigama and the Blue and Gold Chess Club with the support of the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka. The Closing Ceremony was held under the patronage of Mr. Duminda Rathnayake, the CEO of TIGO, a leading Telephone Company of Sri Lanka, the main sponsor and Mt. Upali Gunasekera, the Vice President of Chess Federation of Sri Lanka and the Principal of Royal College, Colombo, Mr. Luxman Wijesuriya, Hony. Secretary of CFSL, Mr. R Anantharam, Chief Arbiter, Mr. Muditha Hettigama, the Organizer, Mr. Ferdinandaz, representing the Ceylon Continental Hotel were also present. A total of 15,000 US $ were distributed among the winners with a 3000$ 1st Prize.

GM Moradiabadi Elshan (Iran), after a good spell in the early rounds had to satisfy with the 4th place while GM Filippov Anton (UZB) earned the 5th Place.

IM Zozulia Anna won the Women's beat among women's award while WDM Soumya Swaminathan was 2nd in that category and WCM Ivana Maria Furtado was third among women players.
