The 3rd stage of Balkan Grand Prix was held at Iassy between 19-25 August, a circuit which has included till now the tournaments of Sarajevo (12-18 May) and Cetinje (9-17 August), under the auspices of the Balkanic Chess Federation, led by Ion-Serban Dobronauteanu, the President of Romanian Chess Federation. With a prize fund of 7500 Euro, the tournament of Iassy was dedicated to the memory of one of the greatest Romanian writers, Mihail Sadoveanu (1880-1967), being organized by the county chess association (President FM Vasile Manole).
After 9 rounds, the first place, contended of 154 participants, was split between six players with 7 points (in order of tie-break): Viorel Iordachescu, Vasile Sanduleac (both Moldova), Lucian Filip (Romania), Momchilo Nikolov (Bulgaria), Ciprian-Costica Nanu, Vlad-Cristian Jianu (both Romania).
