 The $33,000 Armed Forces Officers Club chess tournament is scheduled 23 to 26 August 2009 in Abu Dhabi. The 9-round Rapid Chess tournament will be played in four days with games starting 10pm. At the request of many players, organizers have returned to their traditional format of Rapid Chess. Three separate events will be played: a Masters Tournament, Open tournament and Ladies Tournament. The chess event is now on its third year and is organized by the Armed Forces Officers Club in cooperation with the Abu Dhabi Chess and Culture Club. Download the registration form. In the ongoing Abu Dhabi Chess Festival, GM Aleksej Aleksandrov of Belarus won the Blitz tournament yesterday with 9 points out of 11 rounds, prevailing in the tie break over GM Aleksandr Rakhmanov of Russia. See results and final standings at chess-results.com
Below local hero GM Salem A.R. Saleh gave a simultaneous exhibition against 20 juniors and 10 other participants, scoring 28 wins and two draws during the free day yesterday at the Abu Dhabi Chess Festival. Also part of the Abu Dhabi Chess Festival is a Scheveningen Match between UAE players and foreign masters.
