The Bahamas Chess Federation, The Bahamas Bridge Association, and The Bahamas Pool Checkers Association are delighted to invite players and spectators to participate in The 1st Bahamas Mind Sports Games 2009 which is schedule for Saturday, 15th August 2009 at Kendal G L Isaacs Gymnasium from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. In addition to Chess, Bridge and Pool Checkers, an exhibition section of Warri (Awarri) will be played.
The objective of this first event is to foster better relations among players of the different sports and among the various Mind Sports Organizations in The Bahamas. "We believe that our Sports have much in common and can benefit from hosting joint tournaments. We invite all interested parties to contact the Tournament Directors of the respective Sport and register to participate." In addition, we wish to thank The Minister of Sports for approving the use of the venue for this historical first time event.
The Tournaments format will be as follows:
Chess Three sections are being organized – Open, Closed and Exhibition. The Open Section is for any player desirous of playing. The Closed Section will comprise players participating in The Bahamas Junior Chess Champion 2009 and the Exhibition Section is for Novice Players. The time control for all games will be G30 and the Swiss Pairing System will be used.
Bridge One session of an Open Pairs Event will be held. Awards will be given to the top three pairs. Kibitzing (observation of play) is allowed.
Pool Checkers There will be two divisions, Top Masters and Junior Master which will be round robin with each player playing two games.
Awari (Exhibition) Players will play in one round robin section. This is a board game involving strategy and tactics. It is believed that this game was brought to The Bahamas by enslaved Africans.
We received inspiration for this tournament from The 1st World Mind Sports Games which was organized by the International Mind Sports Association in September, 2008.
