Indians Shine in the Continental Asian Junior Chess Championship 2009 The Indian Players International Master Ashwin Jayaram and Women International Master Padmini Rute managed to clinched the Continental Asian Junior Boys and Girls Chess Championship respectively at these prestigious Championships held from 1st to 7th July 2009 at the Ceylon Continental Hotel, Colombo. Ashwin scored a total of 8 points and Padmini 8.5 points out of the possible 9 games. Ashwin drew with another IM from India, Shyam Sundar while Padimini out played young Navindi Abeywardena of Sri Lanka.
There was a record number of Countries in this first International sporting event held after the ending of the terrorist problem in the country. Eleven Countries, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan. Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Chinese Taipei and Sri Lanka contested in this most prestigious Junior Event in Asia. On behalf of FIDE and the Asian Chess Federation, the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka organized the event.
Amanov Zhanibek (IM) from Kazakhstan with 7 points became 1st Runner up while Lalith Babu (IM) with 6 ½ points, also from India was 3rd with Points in the Boys event. Women’s (IM) Hejazipour Mitra of Iran with 7.5 points came 2nd in the Women’s while Women Grandmaster, Saumya Swaminathan became 3rd with 6.5 points.
Ceylon Continental Hotel was the main sponsor and facilities provided by them for the players were exceptional and all participants experienced a great event. Mr. Namal Rajapakse, the founder Chairman of the Tharunyata Hetak was the Chief Guest at the awarding Ceremony held at Inter Continental Hotel

IM Lalith Babu (India) 6.5 points 4.IM Toufighi Homayoon (Iran), IM Narayanan Srinath(India) , IM Shyam Sundar(India) and FM Vishnu Prasanna(India) 5 points 8. IM Karthikeya(India), P, FM Youan Terry(Singapore) and Saravana Krishnan 5.5 (India)points out of nine games and was in the top ten players in the event. Women: 1. WIM Padmini Tout (India), 8.5 points, 2. WFM Hejasipoure Mitea(Iran), 7.5 points. 3. WGM Saumya Swaminatha(India) 6.5 points, 4. Bakhti Kulkarni(India) 6 points 5. WIM Kiran Mohanty (India), Azgaridashe Minoo (Iran), Preethi R, P Uthra and Samadhi P. Abeywickrama 5 points 10. N Raghavi(India) 4points. Were the top ten in Girls event.
