Onischuk and Pogonina are Moscow Open 2009 winners
International Chess Moscow Open 2009 festival taking place in Russian State Social University (January 31st – February 8th) finished on Sunday evening.
International Grandmaster Alexander Onischuk (USA) has won the main tournament of the festival. In the final round his game with Sergey Tiviakov (NED) ended in a draw and he had 7.5 points from 9. Other competitors were 0.5 points behind. In the tie break – average FIDE rating of competitors – silver was won by Sergey Tiviakov, bronze by Ernesto Inarkiev (RUS). Ian Nepomniachtchij (RUS) and Alexej Korotylev (RUS) were in fourth and fifth places. The tournament Open "A" prize fund is 3000000 rubles. The winner received 500000 rubles.
Natalya Pogonona led in the female tournament "C". She defeated Marina Romanko and had 8 points from 9, one point ahead of her opponents. Each of 5 players got 7 points: GMs Batuyang Mongontuul (MGL), Gu Xiaobing (CHN), Svetlana Matveeva (RUS), and also IM Tatyana Molchanova (RUS), Master FIDE Valentina Gunina (RUS). In the tie break, Molchanova won silver and Matveeva – bronze. Prize fund of Open C was 700 000 Rubles. The winner won 150 000.
CEO of Global Chess, Geoffrey Borg, was a guest of Moscow Open 2009 closing ceremony. FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov at the festival opening ceremony pointed out that the Russian State Social University had become the main venue for worldwide chess development. Besides the festival in RSSU, World Chess Federation held a FIDE arbiters' seminar, an academic and research conference "Chess in Russian and World Education System". Also there was the opening of the first Internet Academy.
