After the seventh round of the 6th Mediterranean Championship being held in Antalya, Turkey from 10 to 18 January 2009, IM Anthony Wirig and IM Ioannis Georgiadis took the lead thanks to their wins against GM Mikhail Gurevich and IM Daniele Vocaturo respectively with 5.5 out of 7. World Schools Champion CM Vahap Şanal of the hosting country has 4.5 out of 7 and is facing his vastly experienced compatriot GM Mikhail Gurevich in the round 8.
