Young 16 year old WIM Irene Sukandar Kharisma is the undoubted leader of a new young generation of Indonesian female chess talent.
Irene was named best woman player at the recently concluded Malaysian Open where she easily exceeded the requirements for her second WGM norm, this coming soon after winning her first norm at the JAPFA Women Grandmaster Tournament held in her hometown of Jakarta.
Beating IMs and GMs is something that Irene now has gotten used to doing in each event she plays in and her 7.5 points from 11 games put her well ahead of many established and titled players.
Inspired by both her achievements and the obvious support given by PERCASI (Indonesian Chess Federation) whose long serving Vice President Eka Putra Wirya (here seen in a rare picture with Irene) provides generous personal sponsorship, many young Indonesian grils have taken up chess seriously.
Proof of this are the two young Indonesian girls who just became World Champions at the 4th World Schools Individual Championships - Medina Warda Aulia in the Girls U-11 and Sihite Chelsie Monica in the Grils U-13
