The 2008 edition of the Kalamaria Open will take place at Lyceum of Kalamaria (Greece) from August 27 to September 3, 2008. Organizers are Τhessaloniki Chess Club, Kalamaria Chess Club, and Municipality of Kalamaria. The tournament is a 9 round swiss system with a time control 90 minutes for the first 40 moves plus 30 min for the rest of the game plus an incremental time of 30 seconds per move from first move.

This is the 5th edition of the tournament and it is expecting strong participation. More than 100 players from 25 countries, 20 of them GMs and 16 IMs will play in the competition. Top seeded is GM Tamaz Gelashvili (who finished second at the 4th Kalamaria open tournament), followed by GM Eduardas Rozentalis, GM Emanuel Berg, GM Dmitry Svetushkin, GM Georgy Timoshenko, and the local start GM Dimitrios Mastrovasislis. The top woman player will be WGM Alina Motoc, who will be here with more strong women from the Romanian team - WIM Iozefina Paulet and WIM Ioana - Smaranda Padurariu
