The 5th International Chess Festival "Pskov 2008" took place in Pskov, Russia from June, 20 to June, 29 2008. The grand opening of the 5th International Chess Festival "Pskov 2008" took place in the Grand Philarmonic Concert Hall on the 23rd of June 2008. The colorful and interesting concert program was made for participants and guests of the Festival.
After the welcoming speech of the the President of the Pskov Regional Chess Federation, Vice Governor of Pskov region Dmitry Shakhov, Chief Arbiter of the Festival I. Sokrustov and Director of the Elista FIDE Office V. Namruev made their speeches. The Chief Arbiter of the Festival I. Sokrustov informed the participants about the rules of the competition, appeals procedure and prize system. V. Namruev on behalf of the Kalmyk delegation sent regards of the FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and also thanked the organizers of the Festival for the excellent reception and interesting cultural program.
More than 150 chess players from Russia, Belarus, Latvia and Estonia took part in the International Festival. The youngest player of the Festival Khlebnikov Danil (5 years old) won the special prize and the oldest Gunars Plume (more than 70 years old) from Latvia won prize at blitz marathon.
The Festival consisted of 5 tournaments:
Tournament "A" with ELO rating gathered 41 players.
Tournament "B" gathered 31 players of 1st grade 1990 year of birth and younger.
Tournament "С" gathered 30 the youngest chess players not older than 1994 year of birth.
Tournament "D" – rapid chess. 31 players.
Tournament "E" – blitz marathon with handicap. 27 players.
