The first FIDE Grand Prix tournament took place in Baku, Azerbaijan and was dedicated to the 85th birthday of former Azerbaijan President Heydar Aliyev,
the father of the current President, Ilham Aliyev. The tournament was held
from April 20th to May 6th, 2008. Fourteen of the strongest chess grandmasters were competing in this tournament.
There are three winners of the First FIDE Grand Prix in Baku: Vugar
Gashimov, Wang Yue and Magnus Carlsen, all of whom ended at 8.0/13
points. The winner of the series at the end of 2009 will play the winner of the World Cup for the right to challenge
the World Champion.
