China Wins World Youth Olympiad Print

Twenty eight teams from 20 countries took part in the Youth Olympiad held 20 to 28 August 2002 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. China won by a wide margin, on the basis of stellar performances by their boards 1 and 2 players, with Wang Yue scoring 85% on top board and Zhao Jun tallying 80% on second board. China finished with 31 points out of ten rounds. Ukraine, the tournament top seed, could only place second, with disappointing 60% score on board 1 by IM Alexander Areshchenko and GM-title applicant Sergey Karjakin on board 2 with 75% and a 2373 performance rating score. Natalia Zdebskaja propped up Ukraine with an 81.3% score on board 3. Indonesia took bronze with 26.5 points followed close behind by India with 26. Formerly known as the Childrens Olympiad, the tournament is gaining in popularity following the tradition of the Student Olympiad of the 70s.
