GM Levon Aronian of Armenia beat GM Jakovenko of Russia to win clear first in the World Junior Championship in Goa, India. Aronian surprised his opponent with a sacrificial attack in the middle game. Born 6 October 1982 in Yerevan, Aronian now lives in Germany where he studies German and plays professional chess. "I was lucky," he modestly said.

Luke McShane of England beat world under-18 champion Ferenc Berkes of Hungary to land second place. Local bet Ganguly crushed Miton Kamil of Poland to finish third ahead by tie break over Timofeev of Russia. Ties were broken by the sum of opponents&rsquo ratings less the lowest rated.
