 FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov awarded the checks in the million dollar FIDE Man vs. Machine Match and gave a short speech. When the draw in game 6 was announced waves of disbelief rippled through the standing-room-only audience and the Grandmasters in attendance were hard pressed to come up with an explanation for Kasparov`s decision to accept the draw offer. Post-match Press Conference by Garry Kasparov
GK: I played the sharpest line I could in the opening.
GK: I sacrificed with 23...Rxc3 and then I offered a draw. I wasn`t sure I was better. I believe it was a logical move and the best move, but it`s hard to do these things against a machine. Perhaps I should have waited.
GK: I wanted to play normal chess. I admit I complete blundered Bc1-a3, which is a very nice maneuver.
GK: Against any human player I would continue fighting in the final position. Black is definitely not worse. But to win it would take a long, long time and there is the pressure of playing the computer.
GK: The longer the game goes, the chance to blunder increases and the program will never make a big mistake. And a draw was a good result. Before the game the main item on my agenda was not to lose.
GK: I came into this match wanting to dominate, but there is a gap between our desires and our abilities. I knew I would get good positions, but finishing these off is the hard part.
GK: In game two, I had a winning position and missed it. In game three I missed winning chances and then even blundered the draw. So I feel I outplayed it.
GK: I analyzed the sacrifice in game 5 extensively and I have to admit it was a good sacrifice. It was a unique situation and a good move.
GK: We looked at it deeply and White might be a little better but White is under a lot of pressure. It`s a big moment for computer chess that it played something like 10...Bxh2 in game five.
GK: To win the game today requires more energy and creativity than ever and Junior symbolizes these advances. But it`s still vulnerable, we saw some shortcomings here in this match. We saw its strengths and weaknesses both.
GK: The machine will never collapse, but a human can never be so sure. |
