In the wake of the state visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to the United Kingdom a Chess exhibition jointly hosted by Lord Rotschild and FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov was held at Somerset House on Saturday 28 June 2003. The event, which was sponsored by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, witnessed an exhibition of rare chess set collections and a simultaneous exhibition featuring the 12 year old British Master David Howell, Grandmasters Sergei Kariakin and Daniel King. A dinner hosted later in the evening by Lord Rotschild included many chess enthusiasts among whom were former American First Lady Mrs Nancy Regan, H.R.H. Princess Firyal Mohammed of Jordan, Dr. and Mrs Henry Kissinger and Lady Hamlyn of Edgeworth.
