Report of Chief Arbiter:
The World Amateur Championship takes place at the Saint George Hotel, Pretoria from 2-12 July. This is the first time a World Chess Championship has ever taken place in Africa. There are 123 entrants. This is the largest-ever entry for the event which first took place in Hastings, England in 1995-6 and has never attracted more than 70 plyers while there.
Most of the entrants are, of course, from South Africa. But there are players taking part from as far afield as Scotland, Australia and Brazil. The event is running alongside the South Africa Open Championship. The World Amateur takes place in the morning and the SA Open in the afternoon, so many players are gluttons for punishment and taking part in both. There are also booster sections and a junior event. Thus this is a veritable feast of chess and a true festival. One of the greatest attractions of chess for me, as an organizer, is that players of all ages, shapes and sizes, play alongside each other. Also, SA is truly the Rainbow Nation.
I have been surprised high accurate the SA Rating system is. It has been an excellent predictor of results. Also the numbers equate well to those from players of other countries. My knowledge does not extend as far as to know which players are favourite to win the event, apart fromn the bare rating information.
It is always a delight to travel to a new country and learn how things are done there. We cannot expect conditions or problems to be identical the world over. We are used to the first round of a Swiss being somewhat messy with late entries and players who fail to &rsquopitch up&rsquo. Less common is that players fail to do so for later rounds and yet expect to be paired for subsequent games. Pitch up as a term for arriving for play is also new to me.
Thus the whole event is a delightful experience. I am very greatful to CHESSA (the South African Chess Association) for inviting me to come as Chief Arbiter for this event. Naturally I have also taken the opportunity to be a tourist. I have gone to game reserves and seen many animals in their natural habitat, including of course, the most rapacious of them all- the tourist.
