The Meeting of the FIDE Executive Board held in Halkidiki accepted the reports of the Development Commission and its committees. These included in particular, the report of the Trainers Committee chaired by FIDE Vice-President & Development Commission Chairman Ignatius Leong. The meeting of the Trainers Committee agreed to establish 5 levels of accreditation of chess trainers. Mr Leong will submit the proposals on accreditation to the Presidential Board. In additition, he will be submitting a proposal to provide financial rewards to chess trainers whose trainees produce outstanding performances. After taking into consideration the needs of CACDEC and the Committee for Chess in Schools, the EB endorsed the proposal to re-structure the Trainers Committee. Basically, there will be 2 levels and programs for training of chess trainers - for the basic level sufficient enough for teaching chess in schools and the masses and the level for training players to achieve excellence. It is with regret that six years have passed and the Trainers Committee had failed to produce any form of training program. There is a need to endorse some training programs (syllabus) so that these could be used as the referance or syllabus for related seminars and in the FIDE-endorsed chess academies; in particular the Berlin FIDE Chess Academy which was officially opened in December 2003. The Development Commission appeals to all experienced Chess Trainers in their respective fields to submit their programs for endorsement. We also request that National Chess Federations which already have successful existing programs to assist this world-wide project to improve teaching techniques.
