 Ukraine finished the Olympiad with a flourish, beating France 3:1 to tally 39.5 points, a convincing three points ahead of runner-up Russia, top seed in the 129-team Olympiad. Russia got their revenge 3:1 over China to tie Armenia with 36.5 points but grab the silver on a better Buchholz tie break. The Chinese women completed their victory with a 2:1 win over Slovakia to finish with 31 points, also three points ahead of runner-up USA. Russia beat France 2:1 for the bronze. Visit the

Round 13
Ukraine drew 2:2 with Georgia to practically clinch the title with 36.5 points after the penultimate round of the Olympiad. Russia beat Cuba 2.5-1.5 to remain in second with 33.5 points followed closedly by Armenia with 33 after a 2:2 draw with France. China beat India 2:1 to win the Women`s Olympiad with 29 points. Fighting for second are USA and Russia with 25.5 each, Georgia with 25 and France with 24.5.
Round 12
Ukraine continued its winning streak in the 12th round, beating Poland 2.5-1.5 on wins by GMs Eljanov and Karjakin. Ukraine widens its lead with 34.5 points, 3.5 points ahead of second running Russia which lost 1.5-2.5 to Georgia. Tied with Russia at 31 points is Armenia which drew 2:2 with the USA. The Chinese women stumbled 1:2 against Georgia but held on to its commanding lead with 27 points. Georgia has 24 points together with the USA.
Round 11
Ukraine beat Cuba 3:1 to maintain solo lead with 32 points after 11 rounds of the Olympiad. Russia edged the USA 2.5-1.5 to remain within striking distance at 29.5 points. Armenia is in third with 29 points after trimming Switzerland 2.5-1.5. China drew with Hungary 1.5-1.5 to stay on top in the Women`s Olympiad with 26 points.
Round 10
Solo leader Ukraine drew all four boards with the USA to tally 29 points, 2 points ahead of top seed Russia, 27, and third running Armenia, 26.5. Russia beat France 2.5-1.5 on a win by top board Peter Svidler over Joel Lautier while Armenia crushed Slovenia 3.5-0.5. The Chinese women suffered their first loss, 1-2 against the USA but held on to a commanding lead with 24.5 points after 10 rounds. Hungary follows in second with 20 points after beating Latvia 2.5-0.5.

Round 9
Ukraine drew with Armenia 2:2 to retain its lead with 27 points, 2.5 points ahead of top seed Russia which edged India 2.5-1.5 in the Olympiad 9th round. The USA climbed to third slot a half point behind after crushing host Spain A 3.5-0.5. The Chinese women are unstoppable, blanking erstwhile second running Lithuania 3:0 to take a commanding lead with 23.5 points, six points ahead of their closest rivals, Russia, USA, India and Hungary.
Round 8
Ukraine beat Bulgaria 3.5-0.5 in round 8 action to lead with 3 points at the halfway mark of the Olympiad. Top seed Russia trails in second with 22 points after scoring 2.5-1.5 over Armenia which has 21 points together with India which beat host Spain-A 2.5-1.5. The Chinese women continued their winning streak, beating Poland 2:1 to lead with 20.5 ponts, 4 points ahead of Lithuania which beat England 2:1. Russia and Hungary follow with 16 points each. Round 7
Ukraine beat India 2.5-1.5 to increase their lead to 2 points with 21.5 points after 7 rounds GM Segey Karjakin, 14, gave Ukraine their victory with a win over 27-year old GM Kunte Abhijit as the three other boards were drawn. Russia, Bulgaria and Armenia are tied for second at 19.5 points.
Russia lost to Bulgaria 1.5-2.5 to dampen their chances to catch up with Ukraine. IM Ivan Cheparinov upset Russian star Alexander Grischuk while the three other boards were drawn.
Armenia beat Israel 3:1 to catch up with the leaders. GM`s Lev Aronian and Rafael Vaganjan beat Emil Sutovsky and Ilia Smirina, respectively, to give Armenia the boost.
The Chinese women beat France 2.5-0.5 to take a commanding 4 point lead with 18.5 points. Poland and Lithuania trail with 14.5 points each. Poland blanked Cuba 3:0 while Lithuania followed suit with a 3:0 shut out of Germany.
Players took a break from the tournament in the previous night`s traditional Bermuda party, held every Olympiad since Malta 1980 with the exception of Elista 1998.
Round 6
Ukraine`s lead was cut down as they could only edge Azerbaijan 2.5-1.5 to tally 19 points after six rounds. Only a point behind is top seed Russia which crushed Israel 3.5-1.5. Among the women, China beat Russia 2-1 to pull away with 16 points, 3 points ahead of second running France which beat Ukraine 2-1. Thursday, 21st October, is a rest day. Games resume on Friday.
The traditional Bermuda party will be held Wednesday night, an all night bash which many players look forward to every Oympiad.
Standings after Round 5
Ukraine held on to solo lead after 5 rounds of the open Olympiad with 16.5 points after a draw on all boards with Israel which trails a half point behind at 16 points. Azerbaijan follows with 15 points after beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 3:1 on wins by Teimur Radjabov and Gadir Guseinov. Russia and Bulgaria share fourth slot with 14.5 points each. In the women`s Olympiad, China beat England 3:0 to take a commanding lead with 14 points, 3 points ahead of second running Russia and Ukraine which drew with each other.
Round 4: Ukraine Men, Chinese Women in Solo Lead
Ukraine held on to top spot after beating top seed Russia 2.5-1.5 with a win by Vassily Ivanchuk over Alexander Morozevich. The other three games were drawn between Ruslan Ponomariov and Alexander Grischuk, Andrei Volokitin and Alexander Khalifman and between Alexander Moiseenko and Vadim Zvjaginsev.
Israel jumped to second slot with 14 points after crushing Bulgaria 3.5-0.5. Winning for Israel were Boris Gelfand, Emil Sutovsky and Iliam Smirin over Kiril Georgiev, Aleksander Delchev and Ivan Cheparinov, respectively.
Bunched together in third slot are Russia, Azerbaijan and Slovakia, each with 12 points each. Azerbaijan beat Scotland 2.5-1.5 while Slovakia similarly smashed Moldova 3.5-0.5.
India scored a big upset over the United States of America, 2.5-1.5 to trail with 11.5 points. Viswanathan Anand drew with Alexander Onishuk. Scoring for India were Pentala Harikrishna and Abhijit Kunte over Alexander Shabalov and Alexander Goldin, respectively. Igor Novikov saved the U.S. with a win over Chanda Sandipan.
Tied with India at 11.5 points are France, Spain A, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Armenia and Cuba.
Among the women, top seed China beat erstwhile co-leader Germany 2.5-0.5 to grab solo lead with 11 points. Former women’s world champion Xie Jun beat Ketino Kachiani and 18-year-old Huang Qian beat WIM Jessica Nill. Elisabeth Pehtz saved Germany from a shutout by holding Xu Yuhua to a draw.
Russian women beat the United States 2-1 on a win by WGM Tatiana Kosintseva over IM Irina Krush. The other two games were drawn between Alexandra Kosteniuk and Zsuzsa Polgar and between Ekaterina Kovalevskaya and Anna Zatonskih.
Russia, Ukraine and England are tied for second at 9.5 points each. Ukraine beat Hungary and England beat Slovakia by similar 2.5-0.5 slates.
Tied at 9 points each are Germany, India and France. India beat The Netherlands 2-1 while France beat Kazakhstan 2.5-0.5.
Ukraine with Perfect Score after 3 rounds
After three rounds, only Ukraine is left with a pefect score of 12 points in the Men`s Olympiad followed closely by Israel, Bulgaria and Russia with 10.5 points each.
Ukraine blanked Indonesia, Spain B and the Czech Republic 4:0 each time. Ivanchuk, 35, gave Ukraine three points with two points each coming from Ruslan Ponomariov, 21, Andrei Volokitin, 18, Alexander Moiseenko, 24, and Pavel Eljanov, 21, with a point coming from Serge Karjakin, 14. Ukraine has one of the youngest teams with an average age of 22.
Top seed Russia beat Andorra 3.5-0.5, Switzerland 3:1 and shut out Sweden 4:0 in the first to third rounds, respectively. Israel blanked South Africa 4:0, then crushed Australia 3.5-0.5 and beat Serbia and Montenegro 3:1. Bulgaria beat Wales 3.5-0.5, shut out Kazakhstan 4:0 and beat Slovakia 3:1.
Among the women, Germany and China are tied at 8.5 points each followed by the United States, Russia and Hungary with 7.5 points each.
China is top seed in the women’s with former women’s world champion Xie Jun, Xu Yuhua, Zhao Xue and 18-year-old WIM Huang Qian. The surprise is 16th seed Germany with IM Ketino Kachiani, WGM Elistabeth Paehtz, WIM Jessica Nill and WIM Tina Meitzner.
