A new monument to the 9th World Chess Champion Tigran Petrosian was opened in Aparan, one of the Armenian cities. At the same time the central square of Aparan was named after Petrosian.

A new monument to the 9th World Chess Champion Tigran Petrosian was opened in Aparan, one of the Armenian cities. At the same time the central square of Aparan was named after Petrosian.
On this occasion FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, World Champions Boris Spassky, Garry Kasparov,
Veselin Topalov sent their greetings and congratulations to the organizers.

On behalf of FIDE I would like to express my deepest gratitude for your decision to immortalize the
memory of the 9th World Champion Tigran Petrosian.
Petrosian is a real chess giant for all of us, an exceptional talent, who had conquered the hearts of
chess fans with the wonderful unforgettable play style. It's furthermore pleasant to realize that the
monument and square in the center of Aparan will always remind of the real roots of the great Armenian
son, the chess genius.
I express my acknowledgement to the authorities of Republic of Armenia, citizens of the city of Aparan,
architects and sculptors, workers and sponsors, to all who participated in this thankful undertaking.
