The Russian Youth Chess Championship U-8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 of the South Federal District is taking place in Elista from 1 to 10 November 2007. More than 600 guests including participants, parents, journalists and chess fans from all southern parts of Russia came to Elista. Head of the Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov attended the Opening Ceremony of the Championship. In his speech, addressed to all participants and guests, he underlined that all important decisions in respect of chess development are taken in the capital of Kalmykia. Elista is called a Chess Mecca. Many World Championships and World Olympiad 98 took place in the chess capital. Read more and see photos from the Opening.
