Last week the Slovak Olympic and Sports Committee (SOŠV), at its 56th General Assembly in Bratislava, celebrated its annual sports awards ceremony. During the act, a total of ten prizes were awarded: seven for sports personalities, one for team sports, and two for legal entities.
The International Master Eva Repkova received the prestigious Matilda Palfyova Award, given to women for their sporting results, and their activity in sports promotion and in favour of the Olympic movement.
Repkova, who is also the Chairperson of the FIDE Commission for Women's Chess (WOM), had a fulgurant career: after learning to play chess at 5 years old, she became Slovak Women's Champion in 1987 at the age of 12, and won the Czechoslovak Women's Chess Championship in Pardubice in 1991 at age 16.
She also won silver medals in the World Girl's Under-14 Chess Championship in Timișoara 1988, and at the World Girl's Under-18 Chess Championships in Guarapuava 1991 and Bratislava 1993. In 1995 she came second (on tie-break) behind Nino Khurtsidze in the World Girl's Under-20 Chess Championship in Halle.
The award, that was given to her by Anton Siekel (President of Slovak Olympic Committee) is named after Matylda Palfyova, the first Slovak women to win a medal at the Olympic Games.
