The 13th International Tashkent Open chess tournament, Memorial of Georgy Agzamov finished in Tashkent on March 18th.
Two open tournaments (A and B) were played with 9 rounds according to the Swiss system. The tournament was held in the International Chess Academy in Tashkent. The organizers were Uzbekistan Chess Federation and the Central Chess Club with a great support from sponsors, including very popular in Uzbekistan juice brand “Bliss”. Chief Arbiter of the tournament IA Panagiotis Nikolopoulos (Honorary Chairman of FIDE Arbiters’ Commission) and the Deputy Chief Arbiter IA Alexander Bakh (Executive Director of the Association of Chess Federations) were awarded with special gifts by the tournament director IA Husan Turdialiev (President of Zone 3.4 FIDE, First Vice President of Uzbekistan Chess Federation).
The prize fund was USD 20,000 including special prizes for the best performance among seniors, women and juniors in group A and for women and youth in group B.
223 players from 14 countries were taking part in the events, including 37 participants not from the hosting country. With 13 grandmasters and 14 international masters in the group A four players were able to receive the anticipated title norms. One of them was international master from Uzbekistan Shamsiddin Vokhidov, who finished the tournament on clear second place with 7 points and GM norm. One of the prize winners in the women category Nilufar Yakubbaeva (Uzbekistan) got her first WGM norm. The 12-year-old year old WCM Umida Omonova (Uzbekistan) won the first place in the category among girls under 20, once again showing her progress and talent.
The winner of the A group became international grandmaster Alexei Fedorov (Belarus) with 7.5 points. GM Alexander Fier (Brazil) finished the tournament on third place with 6.5 points. In group B three players finished tournament with 7.5 points, but the best tie-break determined the winner Server Abduraimov (Uzbekistan).
