In their last round clash, Anish Giri tried to complicate matters with an exchange sacrifice but Magnus Carlsen had no problems neutralising the white threats and Anish soon offered a draw in an inferior position. With that result, Magnus Carlsen made it a record seventh victory at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament and also defended his title from last year.

The World Champion scored an unbeaten 9/13, Giri took sole second place with 8.5/13 and Nepomniachtchi, Anand and Ding shared third place on 7.5/13. Elsewhere, there were two decisive results in the final round of this year’s Masters section. Richard Rapport defeated Jorden Van Foreest to finish on a 50% score and finally, after six hours of play, Sam Shankland beat Vladimir Kramnik after the former World Champion overpressed in the endgame.

The Challengers meanwhile was decided as early as an hour and a half into the round, as Vladislav Kovalev found a beautiful tactical shot and won his game against Kuipers in only 24 moves. The Grandmaster from Belarus thus won the Challengers with an impressive score of 10/13, got a live rating of over 2700 for the first time and, most importantly, secured his place in next year’s Masters’ group. Interestingly both pursuers, Chigaev and Espienko, both lost their first game of the event today, against Bareev and Gledura respectively. They thus shared second place with Gledura, with all three players scoring 8.5/13.
