The currently 2nd strongest Turkmenian chess player according to FIDE ELO ratings, IM Meilis Annaberdiev won the Grandmaster group of First Saturday Budapest chess tournament in July 2018. He collected 6.5 points out of 9 games, only half points separated him from the desired GM norm after a well-fought tournament.

Another rising Indian talent, 15 years old FM Arjun Erigaisi finished 2nd with 6 points. Though he played this tournament as a FIDE Master, the last FIDE congress already granted him an IM title, which he’ll get at the end of the mandatory waiting period.

The happiest player at the end of the competition was probably 20 years old FM Yevhenii Yelisieiev (UKR), who achieved his third and final IM norm with 5 points. Hopefully he’ll come back later for a GM norm as well.

14 years old Lye Lik Zang from Malaysia played stable as the lowest rated player in the group, and besides his only loss, he was the only one who could defeat the later winner of the tournament, thus denying his GM norm with the upset victory.

Experienced IM Artur Frolov (UKR) won the IM section with 7 points. Unfortunately he is already an IM, so this performance didn’t reward him a norm, but he proved his class with confident playstyle.

FM Theo Gungl (GER) collected 6.5 points also unbeaten, and maybe if he would have been a bit braver in the last round, where he agreed to a draw in a probably better position, he could’ve reach his IM norm. Hopefully next time he will succeed in doing so.

Routined GM Ivan Farago (HUN) finished unbeaten with 6 points, reaching third place in the group.

11 years old young Bai Adelard (TPE) played first time in a strong group like this. He couldn’t collect many points, but hopefully the experience he got will help him in similar situations during later tournaments.

IM Sandor Farago (HUN) won the FM group with a stunning 8.5 points out of 9 games. He had a winning position even in his last game, very close to reach a perfect performance.

Another Hungarian IM, Emil Szalanczi finished 2nd with 5.5 points – could have been more if he shouldn’t have to forfeit his 2nd round game against his weaker rival.

14 years old Attila Forgacs Jr. (HUN) also played well in this group, his 50% performance meant gaining some ELO ratings.
