Experienced Serbian grandmaster Ilincic Zlatko won the First Saturday Budapest GM tournament in June. GM Ilincic overwhelmed most of his opponents with his stable, teacher-like playstyle, allowing only 4 draws out of 9 games. If he were a candidate, his 7 points would have earned a norm for him.

It’s not usual that the 3 GM title holders take the first 3 places, but GMs Kotronias Vasilios (GRE) and Fernandez Daniel Howard (ENG) collected 6 and 5,5 points, overtaken the aspirants of the group.

CM Nguyen Van Thanh (VIE) was a returning player. This month he was very peaceful, all of his games finished with a draw except for one defeat against GM Kotronias.

Budapest may become one of the favorite cities of FM McPhillips Joseph (ENG). The 21 years old FIDE Master arrived in a great form from Bolton, and reached the 7 points necessary for his first published IM norm in the International Master group.

Veteran Hungarian GM Farago Ivan (HUN) proved his class, won 6 games on the tournament, only the winner could defeat him.

A large contingent of chess players from India played in this group. Moksh Amit Doshi, Alok Sinha and Narendran Gouthaman formed a nice group, 14 years old Alok was the most successful among them, gaining 57 Elo at the end of the tournament.

In the Development group 6 players were competing for the places and the rating. Havaskori Laszlo (HUN) and Nagy Gyorgy (HUN) reached 8 points out of 10, but the only unrated player of this month’s tournaments, Sifter Thomas L (USA) was also happy because he could perform well enough to reach a published rating on FIDE list in July.

There was another group in July, a scheveningen system, where a group of 5 stronger players played against a group of 5 lower rated players 2 rounds. The group was named after Hungarian chess player Attila Nadassy, who came out of the idea of this system. Ideally the true winners of this type of matches are the lower rated players, but in this month experienced FM Mayer Istvan (HUN) could win all 10 of his matches in the stronger team. In the lower rated team Demirciler Erhan (TUR) could feel accomplished, gaining 61 Elos after his matches.
