The 6th edition of one of the strongest world chess tournaments takes place from 26th May to 10th June 2018, in Stavanger, Norway.
The event features 10 of the world top 13 chess players: #1 Carlsen Magnus (NOR 2843), #2 Caruana Fabiano (USA 2822), #3 Mamedyarov Shakhriayar (AZE, 2808), #5 Ding Liren (CHN, 2791), #6 Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA, 2789), #7 Karjakin Sergey (RUS, 2782), #8 So Wesley (USA, 2778), #10 Nakamura Hikaru (USA, 2769), #12 Levon Aronian (ARM, 2764) and #13 Viswanathan Anand (IND, 2760).
After the inaugural press conference a round-robin blitz tournament was held. GM Wesley So was the clean winner with 6/9 points, half a point ahead of Hikaru Nakamura and Viswanathan Anand.
The main classical event started on 28th May.
The playing venue will be Clarion Hotel Energy for the first six rounds, and the final three rounds will be played in Stavanger Concert Hall.
In the first two rounds the only decisive game was the victory of the World Champion Magnus Carlsen over his challenger Fabiano Caruana.
For the first time the Altibox Norway Chess also includes the Open tournament, A and B, which will be played at the same locations as the main event. The A Open tournament is for all interested players, while the B tournament will be organized for players with Norwegian elo under 1500. The events will be played in 7 rounds, Dutch system.
