The 5th Vugar Gashimov Memorial is taking place from 19-28th April in Shamkir, Azerbaijan, as a ten-player round robin super-tournament of 21st category.
The top rating favourite is the reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen with 2843 elo points. Carlsen was the winner of Gashimov Memorial in 2014 and 2015. The Azerbaijani grandmaster, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov took the winning trophies in the previous two years.
The Gala Opening Ceremony of the Shamkir Chess 2018 Tournament in memory of Vugar Hashimov was on 18th April at the Center named after Heydar Aliyev.
