Baskaran Adhiban winner of 2018 GAMMA Reykjavik Open |

The 33rd edition of GAMMA Reykjavik Open was held from 5th-14th March at Harpa in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The event was dedicated to the chess legend and 11th World Chess Champion - Bobby Fischer, and besides the Open tournament, several events are organized in honor and importance of chess contribution of Bobby Fischer.
Heading into the last round of the Open tournament, the leader Baskaran Adhiban had to face Mustafa Yilmaz with the black pieces in a decisive game for the title.
Yilmaz had the white pieces and opened with his usual 1.d4 and Adhiban went for a Stonewall setup. The game had some dynamics in the middlegame and white had chances of a small pull but Adhiban defended well until Yilmaz settled on a repetition which secured the title for Adhiban on the first try.
Adhiban said before the tournament that he hoped Fischer’s spirit was with him and the said after it that he though it was! It’s hard to argue and especially with the nice wins in rounds 7 and 8. Here is the last round game.
Fantastic news for the future and organisation of the GAMMA Reykjavik Open as it was announced that GAMMA will be renewing their sponsorship deal for another three years! It is also clear that Harpa will be available as the playing venue.
