1.0 Introduction
The MUBS qualifiers got under way on Friday the 17th – 18th of November at the ADB building that’s located within the University campus. They were aimed at selecting the strongest individuals, Males and Females to represent the University at the 17th Inter-University games that will be taking place at Ndejje University from the 16th - 21st December 2017 at the University’s Main Campus in Luwero District.
During these qualifiers MUBS Chess Club invited the 5th highest rated East African Okas Walter rated 2271 to offer the players insight and motivational preparations tips. This allowed the participants to interact and also learn new Tactical play during the presentation.
The Qualifiers were sponsored by Kayondo Mark Hillary and refreshment’s provided by Mr. Richard Kawere, the Sports Tutor Makerere University Business School.
2.0 Status report
Uganda Chess Federation in partnerships with MUBS chess club organized the Qualifiers at the ADB Building with in the University Campus
The tournament attracted a field of 22 players, (3) ladies and (19) Men. The tournament had 4 rated players Mr Ojede, Paul Ogweng – 1877, Mr. Mugisha Ivan Jalagatha – 1869, Mr. Sanya Derrick – 1850 and Miss. Mugide Safinah - 1331
3.0 Rounds and System
Six (6) rounds were played in the Swiss system for the MUBS Qualifiers of 45 mins with no increment and Mr. Sanya Derrick accumulated (6) points out of a total (6).

6.0 Prizes and winners The top 5 players qualified to represent the University at the 17th Edition of the Inter-University games at Ndejje in Luwero District.
7.0 Challenges - Funding for the qualifier is still not forth coming so depends on well wishers
- Lack of a playing venue, hence clubs has to improvise by using available grounds around the University
- Players lack of knowledge of FIDE rules
- Inadequate lady players for the club making the field un competitive
- Exam preparation, as players had to choose between playing the qualifiers and preparing for their exams.
8.0 Way forward
- MUBS Chess Club must plan and ensure sponsorship for the qualifiers before start of the nest qualifying Campaign
- MUBS Chess Club works more closely with UCF, NCS, ACC and FIDE to get the necessary assistance during national and international events to be able to meet top level performance
- MUBS Chess Club, prints and circulates rules and regulations in accordance to the National laws and FIDE rules to improve knowledge and understanding of them.
- MUBS Chess Club in partnership with the Office of the Sports Tutor should incentivize more female participation in the qualifiers
