Rasht lifts Dubai Cup

The top seeded Iranian team Rasht registered a convincing 4 – 0 victory over Dubai in the final round to clinch the Dubai Cup for Asian Cities Chess Championship with 16 match points here at KiiT University on Friday.

Host Bhubaneswar with 14 match points finished as runner up after settling for a draw with Puri in the final round encounter while Dhaka finished third with 13 match points after defeating Muscat.

Rakesh Kumar Jena of Bhuaneswar won Gold on second board while Rasht team members Arash Tahbaz, Faghirnavaz Ali, Sadeh Shahin and Soozankar A M won Gold on First, Third, Fourth and Fifth boards, respectively.

In a colourful closing ceremony, Shri. Achuyuta Samanta, founder Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology and Kalinga Institute of Social Science gave away the medals and trophies to the winners in presence of Shri. Sekhar Chandra Sahu, Vice President AICF, Shri. KK Sarma, Secretary All Odisha Chess Association and Shri. Mahdi Abdulrahim, Chief Arbiter(UAE).

Rasht moves closer to clinch the title

Iranian team Rasht on course to secure the Dubai Cup after an easy outing against Muscat in the penultimate round of Asian Cities Team Chess Championship at KiiT University on Thursday.



The top seed Iranian team not faced any resistance from their Omani rivals to register comfortable 4 – 0 victory. Host and second seed KIIT Bhubaneswar maintained their second spot on the point table after beating Cuttack 3½ - ½ . For Bhubaneswar, Rakesh Kumar Jena, Utkal Ranjan Sahoo and Kiran Manisha Mohanty produced decisive result for their team while Swayams Mishra forced to split the point with his lower rated rival Rabindra Kumar Ojha.



Dhaka moved to the third spot after beating Malaysian team Penang in a nail biting match that ended in narrowest victory margin. In other matches, Dubai signed peace with Puri while Kolkata overcome Alquds and KISS Bhuaneswar defeated higher seeded Chinese Taipei. For KISS, Nayak Sanjan Kumar and Manindra Karjee produced resounding victories over their higher rated rivals Wang Ting Hao and Liu Yeh Yang, respectively while Tapan Badamundi held Min Po Yen to seal the match.

Asian Cities Team Chess Championship 2017 - Round 7

Rasht back on sole lead; Penang held KIIT Bhubaneswar

Rasht defeated KISS Bhubaneswar without much struggle to be back at sole lead with 12 match points in the Asian Cities Chess Championship which is now underway at Kalinga Institute Industrial Technology.

It was an easy day for the Iranian team in the office as they outwitted the rivals 4-0 while overnight joint leader KIIT Bhubaneswar suffered a setback for their title hopes as they settled for a peace treaty against Malaysian team Penang and slipped to the second spot with 11 points.

In other seventh round encounters, Dhaka defeated Chinese Taipei and Kolkata lost to Muscat.

Earlier in the sixth round, Rasht defeated Chinese Taipei while KIIT Bhubaneswar outwitted Dhaka.
