Jinja Rapid & Blitz Competition in Uganda to celebrate World Chess Day |

UGANDA CHESS FEDERATION
JINJA RAPID/BLITZ COMPETITION TO CELEBRATE WORLD CHESS DAY
1.0 Introduction
On July 20, 1924 at the eighth summer Olympic Games in Paris, France, the FIDE (World Chess Federation) was Founded. Thus in 1966, on the same day as the founding of the FIDE, International Chess Day begun. Today there are chess tournaments all over the world. The first modern chess tournament having been held in London in 1851 and won by German Adolf Anderssen. In Uganda, UCF proposed to celebrate the day with a tournament in Eastern Uganda in Jinja Town, where it’s believed Chess was born in Uganda. The occasion was hosted by Source Garden Hotel of Jinja on the banks of the River Nile.
2.0 Status Report
Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) in collaboration with the Source Garden Hotel (Jinja district eastern part of Uganda) in partnership with Jinja Knights Chess club organized the Blitz & Rapid tournament at the hotel premises. The event venue was fully sponsored by the Hotel Proprietor (Mr. Tusiime Isaac) with a venue facility while UCF and Jinja Knight Warriors under took other charges that were involved for its success. We are grateful for the support afforded to us by Mr. Tusiime Isaac and pray it continues. The event attracted 15 players in the open category and 1 player in the ladies category. The event had 1 titled player with one FIDE Master (Mr. Patrick Kawuma).
3.0 Rounds and system
Six rounds were played in the Swiss system for the Blitz tournament of 5 min with no increment and, FM Patrick Kawuma accumulated 6 points out of the total 6. Six rounds were also played in the Swiss system for the Rapid tournament with 15 min flat timing; also won by FM Patrick Kawuma.
4.0 Club Representation
4 clubs were represented in the event with Jinja Knight Warriors presenting the bulk of the players as the tournament was held in their territory. Bunamwaya Chess club (BCC) fielded two players; DMARK fielded the only titled player (FM Patrick Kawuma) at the tournament, & Mulago Knights fielded one player.

6.0 Prizes and Winners
The main winner of the tournament was the Jinja Knights Chess club for participating, sharing knowledge, obliterating players on the board, and having the general spirit of togetherness when it comes to chess.
Prizes were as follows;
i) Jinja Knight Warriors – 100,000/= Ugx cash
ii) Mr. Patrick Kawuma – 40,000/= Ugx cash
iii) Mr. Ategeka Henry – 20,000/= Ugx (cash for fuel)
iv) Madam Irene – 20,000/= Ugx (cash for lady support)
