IM Manca Federico (ITA) won First Saturday Budapest GM
The usual monthly tournament series continued with three groups at different level. The GM- section came together of 8 countries of four continents. It was so balanced that nobody could achieve any FIDE Title-norms this time. The winner, Manca Federico (ITA) was closest to it but missed nice winning chances in the penultimate round. He said he played at his best again like he once did in Reggio Emilia (ITA) GM section in 1992 when he defeated world famous GM-s.

The two Australian candidates also brought up high level play.
Ikeda Junta is former National Champion of Japan and has defeated a lot of grandmasters so far but the GM norm was half a point away twice.

Tan Justin achieved a valuable GM norm last year in the British Championship.

Indonesian and Indian success in the IM section
The IM group came together from 7 countries and was a big clash of three young ladies against 7 men. Frolov Artur (UKR) showed outstanding performance winning convincingly in most of his games.

Participation of the former Silent Chess World Champion Klasan Vladimir (SRB) made the field extremely strong. Despite all difficulties two lowest rated players benefitted the most of the tough fights.

Citra Dewi Ardhiani Anastasia member of the Indonesian Women Olympic Team achieved her third WIM norm. She played fearless chess combined with shining tactical skills. Her coach was Cuhendi Sean Winshand (INA) who had spent more than a year studying chess in Hungary.

However, we have to credit the greatest achievement to a 15 year old extremely gifted little boy of India Vardan Nagpal who collected 61 FIDE rating points. He played quite well only in the second part of the competition. Had he started well, he could have broken his record of the previous month when he collected as many as 114 points also in the First Saturday IM section.
WIM Pujari Rucha (IND) who is studying English literature at the Mumbai University of Sciences showed also promising play against the experienced male opponents but needs just a little more confidence to convert better positions into victory.

Since February 2017 the Hotel Berlin Budapest has provided an excellent home to the First Saturday tournaments with its large, bright, air conditioned Studio Hall also offering a separate sound-proof room for analysis. The hotel is situated half an our bus ride off the big traffic of the city, but there are air conditioned tram and bus lines as a part of public transport delivering the guest from the city center to the hotel.
