Two continental champions at First Saturday Budapest Print

Thanks to the generous management of the Hotel Berlin Budapest, a new tournament hall was waiting for the participants of the First Saturday February events. The playing hall is large and bright connected with a noise proof hall for analysis. Playing chess at high level needs silence and finally this traditional tournament series found a place it deserves.

The GM group and also the IM with the participation of two young Continental Champions indeed brought up high level this month. It has been the second time for the winner Torma Robert (HUN) to miss the GM norm with just half a point.

Three U20 Hungarian candidates achieved IM norms. They were all members of the silver medalist U20 National Team at the European Youth Team Ch. last year. Havasi Gergo has already been awarded with the IM title and he just made another huge step to reach the 2400 rating requirement.

Kaczur Florian first achieved IM norm at the U20 World Youth Individual Championship in 2015. He was close to GM norm but was careless in a completely winning position against an experienced GM.

Juhasz Armin who holds the current U18 National Champion title reached his third norm so he does not have to wait long for the IM title since the next FIDE PB takes place in the end of March.

The greatest sportsman of the event was IM Rodriguez Lopez (ESP). He was never thinking of finding excuses for his lost games and not he ever wished to quit after losing five or six.
After his seventh loss he stated: “I am contented with the tournament and also with my games.
I was close to winning at least twice and to draw at least three times. I am happy to play against so strong opponents!” After losing all, he firmly believes to make it better next time!
We are sure he will!

Zlatko
IGM ILINCIC, Zlatko (SRB)

Participation of the U18 Champion of Africa Van Zyl-Rudd Jack (RSA) and former U10 European Champion Krstulovic Alex (HUN) made this group particularly interesting. Their clash was played in a separate noise-free room and the Hungarian boy could win after a very tough battle. We could see that the young African Champion lacks tournament practice since he lost some promising positions and missed an easily winning situation in time pressure. Potentially he is not at all behind his European contemporaries. They seemed to create a harmonic unit with his accompanying coach IM Cawdery Daniel (RSA) who played also well in the GM section. Bronze medalist Farkas Richard (HUN) was closest to IM norm. He may need a little more physical fitness for greater achievements.
The two ambitious young Chinese boys played far better of their current ratings that made the rating changes a little unreal this time.
