For the fourth year running, the ⌠North Urals Cup √ 2006 has come to its end. It featured ten of the world`s strongest women players: Antoanetta Stefanova (BUL), Maya Chiburdanidze (GEO), Tatiana Kosintseva (RUS), Viktorija Cmilyte (LTU), Zhu Chen (QAT), Nadezhda Kosintseva (RUS), Lilit Mkrtchan (ARM), Svetlana Matveeva (RUS), Katerina Lahno (UKR) and 12-year-old Hou Yifan (CHN). IV Women Chess Supertournament “North Urals Cup – 2006” started on July 22 in Krasnoturinsk (Sverdlovsk region).

For the fourth year running a small town in the north of the Urals becomes the world`s capital of women`s chess. Participating in the “North Urals Cup – 2006” were ten of the world`s strongest women chess-players.

The contenders were:

Antoanetta Stefanova (Bulgaria), world champion of 2004
Maya Chiburdanidze (Georgia), 5 time world champion
Tatiana Kosintseva (Russia), Russian women`s champion of 2004
Viktorija Cmilyte (Lithuania), bronze medalist of the 2006 world`s championship
Zhu Chen (Qatar), world champion of 2001
Nadezhda Kosintseva (Russia), European Vice-champion of 2005
Lilit Mkrtchan (Armenia), bronze-medalist of the 2006 European championship
Svetlana Matveeva (Russia), bronze-medalist of the 2006 world championship
Katerina Lahno (Ukraine) European champion of 2005
and the main spotlight of the season – Hou Yifan, (12-year old Chinese, China team`s bronze-medalist of 2006 World Chess Olympiad), gaining a swift grip of position No.8 in the world`s rating-list.

The tournament took place at the stage of Bogoslovsky aluminium smelter’s Arts Palace within the period of July 22 to August 1. The prize fund makes up USD 10.000. The team of arbiters led by the international arbiter and celebrated journalist Yakov Damsky (Russia). The tournament was patronized by the Sverdlovsk region`s Governor Edward Rossel. Chief organizer and general sponsor of the “North Urals Cup – 2006” is - by tradition - Bogoslovsky aluminium smelter (Director General – Sibagatulla Aminov). The tournament was initiated by FIDE Vice-president and Honorary President of the Russian Chess Federation Andrey Selivanov and by the President of the Sverdlovsk Chess Federation Anatoly Sysoev.
