From 8th to 10th of August FIDE Deputy President Georgios Makropoulos visited Andorra where he had meetings with Andorran Chess Federation officials, including the FEVA President Francesc Rechi Perez and the FEVA Vice President and ECU FIDE delegate for Andorra Joan A. Obregon, as well as the Sports Secretary of the Andorran Government Jordi Beal and the FIDE Vice President, President of Spanish Chess Federation Javier Ochoa.
The main point on the conversations was the program for chess in schools in Andorra which is running from 2014 due to support of FIDE, ECU and FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. The agreement between the Andorran Chess Federation, FIDE and ECU will finish in 2018 and so far the results of the program are very successful. During the meeting the Sports Secretary of the Andorran Government Jordi Beal promised to try to go forward with the actual program having the founds coming from the Ministry of Education.
Mr. Makropoulos also visited the 34th International Chess Open Andorra 2016, which was held from 3 to 11th of August. GM Jorge Cori (PER 2601) became the winner of tournament. GM Julio Granda (PER 2672) and GM Maxime Lagarde (FRA 2572) tied for the second place. The oldest participants in the tournament, both Andorran chess players.
