To the Swiss Chess Federation

On behalf of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) and me personally, I wish to express our deepest condolences in connection with the passing away of Victor Korchnoi - one of the most renowned chess players on this planet, with his victories in about 100 tournaments, 4 USSR Champion titles, 6 Chess Olympiad titles. Mr. Korchnoi had also been selected to a team of the world. He has contributed substantially to the popularisation of our sport and is considered rightly as one of the strongest and charismatic players in the entire history of world chess.

The whole sports world and a great number of fans of Victor Korchnoi's talent, mourn with us. He will always remain in our hearts and memories as a personification of great style, wisdom, outstanding talent, brilliant professionalism and decency. In any situation he managed to keep his courage and has stayed a true fighter till his last days.

We are joining his family in mourning.
