On July 7th the FIDE President had a working visit to Nigeria. In Abuja Kirsan Ilyumzhinov met with the Minister of Sports of Nigeria Dr. Tammy Danagogo. At the meeting, it was noted that Nigeria is one of the strongest federations on the African continent and has the long-standing chess traditions. In August 2003 the FIDE Presidential board meeting was held in Abuja and the representative of Nigeria, Mr. Emmanuel Omuku, served as a FIDE Executive Director for many years. The both sides had a productive dialogue on the further cooperation between FIDE and Nigeria, discussed the organization and preparation matters of the Nigerian team for the Tromso Olympiad. President Ilyumzhinov invited Dr. Danagogo as a Guest of Honour to be part of the World Chess Championship Match that will be held in Sochi this November. In addition, the FIDE President met with the Director General of the National Sports Commission Mr. Gbenga Elegbeleye. At the meetings also present were the President of Nigeria Chess Federation Mr. Adeyemi Olalekan, Zonal President Mr. Sani Mohammed, General Secretary of the federation Mrs. Bidemi Ganiyu-Opolo.
