Magnus Carlsen won the title of the World Blitz Champion and from today all three World Champion titles in competitions with different time controls are in the same hands!

The second day of the blitz championship was marked with a tough competition between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi. Russian player won 6 games at the start and after 18 rounds became a sole leader half a point ahead of Carlsen.

World Champion said at the final press conference: “At that point it was certainly in Ian’s hands”. The critical moment came in 19th round when Nepomniachtchi drew with Anton Korobov and Carlsen managed to win a dramatic game against Rauf Mamedov.Therefore the struggle between Norwegian and Russian players has continued.

While Magnus Carlsen showed a perfect result in the last 2 rounds, Nepomniachtchi failed in the game against Aronian and the victory in the last round over his compatriot Alexander Morozevich guaranteed him only the silver medal in the championship. Hikaru Nakamura won five last games and got the bronze medal.
The heroes of the first day Lu Shanglei and Georg Meier left the top boards but there was another dark horse - Russian GM Sergey Yudin, who showed 2789 performance, won 129 elo points and climbed from 86th place of starting list to the 12th.

On the second day Judit Polgar continued to fight against top players and defeated Fabiano Caruana and Evgeny Tomashevsky. Unfortunately, in the last six rounds she scored only 2 out of 6 and finished on 26th place. 



The awarding ceremony took place on 9 pm in Dubai Chess Club. It was attended by Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nehayan President of Asian Chess Federation, Kirsan Iljumzhinov FIDE President, Mr. Khaled Zayed Organizing Committee Chairman, Geoffery Borg FIDE CEO, Jamal Modfa General Secretary of UAE Chess Federation, Abdul Aziz Khoury Deputy President of UAE Chess Federation and other officials.

The World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championship was organized by the aegis of FIDE. The championships took place from 16 to 20 June 2014 in the Chess Club of Dubai.

Carlsen leads on 9/11 after day one. 10 rounds to go.

World Champion Magnus Carlsen started the first day with five convincing victories and keeps leading after 11th round with 9 points out of 11 games. With 8 victories, 1 loss and 2 draws he shows 2987 performance and wins 38 points so far. He is ready to fight for the new title and doesn't hide it.

"Bringing home the Rapid World Championship title. One more to go," has been published in his twitter after his victoruy in FIDE World Rapid Championship.

The top seed of the tournament American Hikaru Nakamura shares the second place together with German player Georg Meier.

Both of them are half a point behind of Carlsen. Georg Meier climbed on the top after defeating Sergey Karjakin, Zahar Efimenko, Etienne Bacrot, Nikita Vitiugov, Laurent Fressinet and Ian Nepomniachtchi.

The result of Chinese player Shanleyu Lu was a real sensation! He was leading the field after 8th round after defeating such strong players as Evgeny Tomashevsky, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, Alexey Dreev and even World Champion Magnus Carlsen. His compatriot Wang Hao explained in the interview that Shanleyu Lu is a very good blitz player and assumed that Magnus Carlsen could have overestimated him.

Nevertheless, Chinese player slowed down in the last three rounds and, as a result, he shares the fourth place together with Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia, current World Champion in blitz Le Quang Liem of Vietnam and Gabriel Sargissian of Armenia.

Two days ago Judit Polgar gave an interview and said she was always better in blitz than in rapid. She finished the first day sharing the 8th place and her great result speaks for her! Coincidently, she had to face Sergey Karjakin in the last round of the first day of the championship same as three days ago in rapid but this time she won the game.

“After 10 rounds of fighting it was a very "tasty" finish off the day with a win against Karjakin with black pieces!:)” wrote Judit Polgar in her twitter. There were many unexpected results at the first day of the World Blitz Championship but this is the reason why all of us enjoy watching blitz.

The number three in starting list Levon Aronian was not successful today and finished the day on the 30th place. Fabiano Caruana and Viswanathan Anand didn’t have a good start but managed to change the situation at the end of the day. Both of them shares the 8th place with +4. Nevertheless there are still 10 rounds till the end, and it is impossible to predict how the tournament will be finished.
